The awful, contrived storyline was one of my biggest gripes about the last game, and it's not quite as in-your-face offensive in Jak 3. Before long Jak's back in the thick of it, and collecting a heck of a lot of Precursor Orbs. But the war in Haven City is still raging, there's a new threat from space, and old alliances die hard. Jak's bravery soon earns him citizenship, and he begins a new life in the wastes. Left for dead in the desert wasteland, they're rescued by a company of nomadic outcasts, who take them to their desolate city. Jak 3 takes place after our hero and his sidekick, Daxter, have been banished from the Haven City of the second game. It fixes some of Jak II's most egregious problems, but the resultant game just doesn't grab me like it should. This review will be harder to write, though, as I don't feel so strongly about Jak 3. Today, being GameSpy's action/platformer aficionado, I'm tasked with reviewing Jak 3, the third and final game of Naughty Dog's trilogy. That article pretty much wrote itself, as did, I imagine, the hate mail it generated. At times, playing Jak II actually made me angry, such was my dislike (and disappointment) for it. In Jak II's case, my visceral reaction was something like hate. It's easiest to write reviews for games that trigger visceral reactions.
